On Tues March 10th Steve Millward gave a talk about the 1857 Manchester Art Treasures Exhibition. The aim of this ambitious plan was to put Manchester on the international map for its Arts & Culture as well as being at the centre of the industrial revolution.
It was part of a wider movement (that also included the growth of local charity organisations) to respond to the disastrous consequences of the industrial revolution for the many impoverished members of the working class who were swept aside by the enormous speed of change in the city
