Every year, the United Nations designates the 1 October as International Day of Older Persons (IDOP). Events are taking place across the country – albeit this year in a different, often virtual format – to celebrate the achievements and contributions older people make to society and raise awareness of the issues and challenges in today’s world.
The year 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations and the 30th anniversary of IDOP. This year has also seen the emergence of COVID-19; it is now more important than ever that we recognise the contribution older people make to society and the multiple roles they play in their local communities.
You can read more about the history of IDOP on the United Nations website.
