Newsletter for Feb 2022

Dear All

It has been great to see most of you back to our activities again and resuming home visits from our volunteers and staff. If ever you fancy trying something new, please just give me a ring and I can chat through with you what might suit. We also have funding for one of our workers to support people trying out something new – Geraldine has supported older members to engage with our Tuesday Parent & Toddler Group (as a volunteer!), the older men’s snooker group, take a journey on the metro, and go to coffee shops. It doesn’t have to be an activity here at CGN if you fancy trying something else in a different venue. Again, please don’t hesitate to pick up the telephone and ask me about this.

Thursday coffee mornings are slowly getting back to normal with speakers and singers, and most weeks we have older member Liz running the small jewelry making table. Nurse Eileen Kendrick has been coming once per fortnight so if you have any concern please come down and see her; no appt needed.

Digital Support
Aidan McIlroy and the volunteers are also running the digital drop in 9.45-12 if you wish to ask anything about your mobile phone, how to set up WhatsApp or zoom, pay bills online, order online shopping or any general query about your computer.

The Drama Group
The drama group have resumed and are working on a performance called “Spring Chickens” which they will perform during the Chorlton Arts festival in May.

Art Group
Our Art group will also be putting on another Exhibition for the Festival so we hope you will come along and support both groups.

Wednesday exercise class re-starting:
From March 2nd Karen Oakes is returning to run a Wednesday exercise session 1.30-2.30pm. It won’t be like her previous class which was very energetic- this new one will suit many of you who would like to get back to some level of fitness or try exercise for the first time. Over the lockdown, and via Zoom, Karen developed her chair-based exercise programme, still geared towards improving balance, mobility, strength, and flexibility, using weights and balls and bands, and she plans to come and run that type of session on site here in the main hall. Please get in touch if you need more information or want to check if there is a space for you to come and see if it is for you.

Coffee shop meet ups:
If ever you fancy meeting some new people at a local café,
then our community staff are still meeting each week at North Star Deli, over the bridge from Morrisons. Older men’s worker Phil is there each Wednesday at 2pm, Moira on Thursdays at 2pm and Diane is 1pm on Friday afternoons. Please just let me know if you would like to give this a go and I can ask the staff to contact you and arrange to meet with you. The group tend to sit outside in the fresh air and those who go along are keen to welcome others to join them for a chat.

Health Event: Thursday 24th March 10-12
We are running a health event in the Hall with plenty of stalls giving out information for you. Come and chat to staff from:
Care & Repair***     the Falls team***      a local pharmacy***
Answer Cancer***    Physical Activity Referral
Scheme***
You can raise concerns, ideas and issues with colleagues fron Our Streets Chorlton, and Healthwatch.
All welcome- tea coffee and cakes provided

Celebrating the Queen Platinum Jubilee:
as you know we have two bank holidays on Thursday 2nd and 3rd of June to celebrate 70 years of the Queens reign so there will be no Thursday coffee morning, Melodics, Art group, gardening group or Friday exercise on those days.

We are however going to hold a party up at Houghend Police Club, like our Christmas event, on Wednesday 1st June 12-3pm but I will send out another letter about that nearer the time, but it is a date for your diary.

Do you want to receive information about various local events or courses or research that you can join in with? Then please let me have your email address and I can include you in the mail out. There is often some interesting events and studies going on.

If anyone knows a private cleaner that they can recommend that would be really helpful?

We really appreciate your support at all our activities and to those of you who send in donations; the council have agreed to extend our main funding until March 2023, which is excellent news for us all.

Take care and see you soon
