Clem Beckett, Bellevue Speedway legend and Spanish Civil War Hero
A Zoom presentation by his biographer, Robert Hargreaves.
The CGN history talk on Thurs Nov 3rd 2022 at 1.30pm will be about Clem Beckett, a famous 1930’s Bellevue Speedway star. He was described as “the most dramatic figure on the race track. He rode as no one else has ever done”. He was also a campaigner for speedway riders rights to a decent income. He so infuriated the employers that he was banned from the sport for a while during which time he earned his money by riding “The Wall of Death”.
In 1936 he volunteered to go and fight with the International Brigade in the Spanish Civil war. He died at the age of just 30, on ‘Suicide Hill’ in the Battle of Jarama on February 12, 1937. Clem’s story will be presented by his biographer, Rob Hargreaves
