The post WW2 Manchester Housing Clearances or “Slum clearances” were a defining event in Manchester’s recent history. In this talk, illustrated with lots of photos, I will focus on the two re-developments of Hulme. The first just after WW2 was a wholesale demolition of an area of terraced housing the Council described as “Endless rows of grimy houses: no gardens, no parks, no community buildings, no hope”. This was replaced by the Hulme Crescents built in 1972 and torn down in 1993. I will end by looking at the wilful demolition of the Alexandra Road shopping area in Moss Side and with some thoughts on Manchester’s current housing policies
